The Scribenote Adventure: Unveiling the Manifesto

In December 2019, I noticed my older sister Katie getting home from work late. This was not a rare “stuck-in-traffic” occurrence either. It was a daily reality for Katie as a practicing veterinarian.

I must have been feeling particularly curious one night when I asked her what was keeping her at the clinic. The answer I was expecting as a 21-year-old non-veterinarian was something unavoidable and wild: demanding clients or raccoon fights or accidental anal gland eruptions. Instead, what Katie told me was that nine times out of ten, the culprit was medical records.

The next thing I asked was if I could come follow her around at her practice to learn what that actually meant. The goal was to see if there was anything I could do as a software developer to maybe speed Katie up a little bit and thus help her get home on time more consistently.

What I saw was that Katie’s record-keeping time, long after the clinic doors had been shut, was dedicated primarily to retyping things she had already directly discussed in the appointment. In software, we have a golden rule: don’t repeat yourself. Yet Katie was doing everything twice - talk about repeating yourself! I told her right there that if she gave me 10 years, I bet I could solve this problem.

I’ll never forget when Katie called me on March 20th, 2023, at 5:04 p.m.

“It’s 5:04 pm, and I’m leaving on time, and it was actually because of Scribenote today.”

In the years since I’ve talked to thousands of veterinarians who’ve told me that this wasn’t just a problem for Katie. This is an industry-wide problem, and it’s one that I think we just cracked.

I was asked to write this blog post to inform the reader about how AI-powered medical records - a technology we pioneered at Scribenote - are transforming veterinary clinics. While these things are all true and could form the basis of a series of blog posts that I may or may not write, the core of the story is this: Veterinarians like my sister are incredibly overburdened. They do not have the extra two hours in their days to write medical records. They deserve better.

That’s all we’re trying to do at Scribenote. It’s all we think about, it’s all we care about, it’s at the forefront of everything we do and every new feature we release and the results speak for themselves.
